SUDBROOKE ROAD
A semi-detached Victorian home in Wandsworth, drawn gently into the present, where old and new come to rest together.
Over the years the house had been altered and added to a number of times, until its rooms felt closed off and awkward to use. We replaced a tired conservatory and refurbished the interiors throughout, opening the home up and making it easier to live in, while keeping the character of the original house.
The centrepiece of the project is a new glazed garden room in place of the old conservatory. A pigmented red zinc roof and painted hardwood framed glazing give it a clearly modern character. Yet the palette was carefully considered, so that the new work settles naturally alongside the character of the original home.
The internal refurbishment removed the divisions that had closed the home in, letting the kitchen and sitting area open into a single, connected space. Daylight is drawn much further inside, and the natural materials and careful detailing give the interior a quiet, grounded feel. From the start, the design was guided by how the client lives day to day, creating a home that accommodates family life and the small rituals that go with it.
